![]() ![]() Dimming then further increases the operating life of the LED lamp.ĭaylight harvesting is the concept of using natural light to enhance indoor lighting and, thereby, reducing the generation of artificial light and saving energy. The dimmed LED lamp also operates cooler, which can save air conditioning costs. The benefits of LED lighting can be further enhanced simply by dimming light to appropriate levels needed for the application, if the amount of energy consumed is reduced while dimmed. Furthering environmental gains, LED-based lighting can achieve lifetimes in excess of 25,000 hours, compared to 7,000 hours for CFL. Although the amount of mercury in a compact fluorescent light (CFL) is not harmful to adults, the disposal of bulbs must be carefully managed to ensure ground and water contamination does not occur. Also, LEDs are following a performance improvement and cost reduction curve that is much steeper than the corresponding curve for fluorescent technology. Incandescents produce approximately 15 lumens/W.įluorescent-based lamps and LED-based lamps today provide similar efficacies, but LEDs have a slight advantage. ![]() ![]() The limits set forth by ESIA effectively ban the use of C light sources. Incandescent lamps produce light below the efficacy limit of approximately 21 lumens/W. No longer can you purchase the traditional 100-W incandescent general application light bulb at all retail locations. The United States Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 began to take effect in January 2012. A better approach is to work with the limitations of the TRIAC-based dimmers (leading-edge) and trailing-edge dimmers without dissipating needless power. This weakens the reasons for using LEDs in lighting by decreasing efficacy and lifetime. Typically, LED lighting applications try to emulate incandescent lamps by dissipating power to satisfy leading-edge dimmers. There is wide installation of a variety of dimmers for traditional incandescent lighting, so LED-based light lamps and luminaries must be compatible with these dimmers. Dimmable lighting applications in residential and commercial installations will account for over 50% of all lamps and luminaires by 2015. ![]() Using LEDs for lighting is an ever-more-popular application because of its high efficacy and long life. Lighting control with traditional TRIAC need not cut efficiency ![]()
